Welcome to the Culips English Podcast!

"There are plenty of English podcasts out there, but our English as a second language (ESL) podcast is for people who want to have fun while learning natural, everyday English, focusing on idioms, expressions, and slang. We always speak English as it’s actually used in day-to-day life, and we give you plenty of explanations of new or interesting terms along the way. At Culips, we’re excited about culture and language!
Our English language podcast is for learners of all levels and ages. Each episode takes you out of the classroom and introduces you to common slang, natural expressions, and interesting vocabulary. Culture is also an important part of Culips, and we want you to get to know us!
By becoming a member of Culips English Podcast, you can learn even more from each episode. Culips Members have access to extra learning materials. As a member, you’ll get a written transcript for each of our episodes, so you can follow along while listening or review the text separately. You’ll also get detailed explanations of new or interesting vocabulary, with additional examples and cultural advice. After all that, you can take the quiz for each episode to see how much you’ve learned. And of course, our English podcast is designed to help you with your listening comprehension too!
We’re a group of friends in Montreal, Canada who thought it would be fun to create an English podcast for people learning the language. We all have experience teaching English and learning other languages, and we know just how challenging and rewarding that can be. We wanted to make an ESL podcast that focuses on the fun stuff: culture and expressions.
So what are you waiting for? Get started learning with Culips now!
Who we are
MauraMaura: Hello! I was really excited when I first heard about this ESL podcast project. It felt perfect for me. I have been teaching English for about 5 years now, in Quebec, Montreal and Tokyo, Japan. I have really enjoyed doing that and learning about different cultures at the same time. Being a student of French myself, I completely understand how difficult it is to learn a new language. That is also why I think it is super important to learn a language how it is actually spoken. I will always do my best to focus on modern English. I promise.

img_robin1.jpgRobin: I always have been interested in languages ever since I was young. And because of that, I went to university to study Linguistic and Cultural Anthropology. After that, I taught in Japan and in Quebec. And now with Culips, I am here to help you with your English language learning.

HarpHarp: Hello All. This is Harp from Culips. I have been fascinated and frustrated by languages since I was a young child. My native tongue is Punjabi and I didn’t actually learn English till I started school at 5 years old. I still remember mixing up potato and tomato when I was 8. I spent the last couple of years teaching conversational English in Canada and abroad in Korea and France. In my own attempt to learn French I started searching for Podcasts and didn’t find anything interesting. That set me on the path to create a fun and interactive way to learn languages. Hope you enjoy our podcasts.

JessieJessie: Hi! I met the Culips team after I moved to Montreal from Ontario to start a job as a medical writer, and I couldn’t wait to join in the fun! I first got involved in teaching ESL as a volunteer during university, and I’ve loved it ever since. I spent a year teaching English at a middle school in Korea, and I couldn’t wait to join the Culips team here in Montreal! I love learning, and I love helping other people to learn. So feel free to send any and all English or cultural questions our way! "

ENGLISH GRAMMAR ONLINE FOR YOU

"We put our first exercises online in April 2000. Our target group: just a handful of students to whom we were giving private tuition then. A year later, we were very surprised to find that our exercises were used by approx. 20 visitors per day. They found our sites via search engines. This encouraged us to offer more exercises on the internet and in August 2001 we started ego4u. Now we have approx. 45,000 users per day, lots of them are regular visitors.
ego4u is created by:
Heike Pahlow @ – Translator (German/English/Spanish) and English tutor with a TEFL certificate. Heike spent one year in Ireland and gave private English tuition during her college years. With the teaching materials developed for her courses, Heike originated the idea to offer online exercises on the web.
Mario Müller @ – Programmer. Mario did Informatics at college for a couple of years and then worked as a programmer for an international logistics company. He finally decided to put all his energy into programming ego4u. Mario is our real language expert, as he knows how to communicate successfully with computers in strange languages like XHTML, PHP and XML.
Stefanie Czapla @ – Illustrator. Stefanie created our mascot Egon, the dragon. She has also illustrated our nursery rhymes and grammar explanations. If you want to see more of her wonderful illustrations, visit Stefanie’s site kleiner-roter-drache.de (little red dragon)."

"A chef friend of mine once told me the secret to good cooking. According to him, success lies in obtaining excellent ingredients.

It all seems so simple really. And as a language teacher I can relate to this. We can’t overestimate the importance of the ingredients that we select for the classroom – that is the materials.

Materials should inspire teachers and engage students. They should be provoking (without necessarily being provocative although that can be good). They should arouse curiosity and get heads thinking and language emerging. During the last few years, the modern teacher has been given access to an explosion in good ingredients to take into the classroom.

Take Western Spaghetti for example – a great animation by filmmaker PES. During this one and a half minute clip, we watch a series of bizarre household objects – a ball of wool, a Rubik’s cube, a handful of rubber bands – being transformed into a delicious looking plate of spaghetti with tomato sauce.

The clip is everything we would want to get students on our side. But what do we do with it? Well, that is where Lessonstream comes in. Lessonstream is a selection of lesson plans – or rather, recipes – which serve to demonstrate how teachers can make use of such materials.

Of course, good chefs don’t stick rigidly to recipes. They adapt them. And I would never expect a teacher to use one of my lesson plans exactly how I have written it.
For that reason, the site uses a Creative Commons license. That is what the logo in the bottom right hand side of the screen is all about. What this means is that teachers have permission to remix, mash and share the content on my site for non-commercial purposes.

Have fun!

Jamie :-)  "

"My name is Sebastian Keil. I live in Hamburg, Germany. Check out my blog sebastiankeil.de.I bought the trademark hat in Stockholm in 2005. But I was always a hat guy. This is me in 2001
FAQ
  1. What is with the hat, why are you wearing it?
  2. Why are you doing this?
  3. Are you getting paid to do the podcast?
  4. Do you wear glasses or not?
1. What is with the hat, why are you wearing it?
A: I just felt naked when I recorded the first episodes, so I tried on several different clothes, from hockey jersey to suit. The hat worked.
2. Why are you doing this?
A: I like it.
3. Are you getting paid to do the podcast?
A: At the moment not. I used to get a small amount of money each month back when the episodes were hosted on that site that shall not be named, but not anymore. I am looking for sponsors to be honest but haven’t really looked that hard."

English with Jennifer

                                                                Bio
"I was born and raised in western Pennsylvania. As the daughter of a Filipino immigrant and an American, I became aware of cultural differences at an early age. My maternal grandparents increased this awareness by sharing what they loved about the Polish, Serbian, and Hungarian cultures their own parents came from. My grandmother taught me to dance the polka before the first grade, and at the age of 10 my grandfather began to take me to weekly accordion lessons. (I don’t know why my brothers were spared. They would probably have been more successful accordion players!) I heard some Tagalog and Polish while growing up, but the words were dropped around my ears like a dry rain that never touches the ground. I absorbed almost nothing. Only as I approached adulthood did I realize the loss of that opportunity.

In junior high and high school I studied French, but I never even came close to being fluent. I could read, I could write, but I couldn’t understand spoken French or carry on a conversation. This experience was key in forming my desire to be a language instructor. When I arrived at the shocking discovery that six years of diligent study didn’t give me the skills to communicate easily in real life situations, I asked myself why. The answers to that question filled me with determination to become a better language learner and to help others in their own language studies.

I met with greater success learning Japanese and Russian in college, but it was Russian that I chose as my major and became fluent in. My graduate studies took me over to Moscow (I had visited Russia a few times prior to this), and it was there that I met my husband and made the transition from teaching Russian to teaching English as a foreign language.

After five years of living and working in Moscow, my husband and I moved to the United States and made Massachusetts our home. I taught private and group lessons at a language school in Boston, and when I took on administrative responsibilities, I began to learn in depth about curriculum design and assessment tools. It was a positive work experience full of creative opportunity. I got the chance to write a lot of materials for my own classes as well as for the school. I was also chosen to take over the teacher training program, which truly grounded me in theory and methodology. I should mention that a final bonus at that school was free Portuguese lessons for a few months!

Since the fall of 2005 I’ve been working from home. Thanks to the Internet, there are an increasing number of career opportunities for English language instructors. I’ve published books, done consulting work, recorded audio podcasts, and made a collection of instructional videos. I’m very excited about what the future holds. I hope to grow more as a teacher and expand my skills by providing different forms of online instruction."

Being an Online Teacher
"Embracing My Identity: The Independence and Dependence of Online Teaching

Identifying myself professionally sometimes mirrors my experience when I’m faced with forms asking for my ethnicity. Invariably I check off “other”. It seems to be the most convenient choice of words. There usually isn’t enough room to explain that I’m half Filipino, a quarter Polish, one-eighth Serbian, and one-eighth Hungarian. Why can’t I simply be “American”?

I also deliberate over the choice of labels when it comes to my professional life. I sometimes opt for the simplest title and call myself an English language teacher. Other times I’m more vague and claim to be an ESL specialist. I have to be careful not to be too general. For instance, if I tell people that I’m an independent contractor, they may begin to think I work in construction or home remodeling. When I’m given the chance to explain myself, I list my various roles: online teacher, materials writer, content creator, blogger, videomaker, and consultant. It’s the length of a mid-week grocery list. Do you understand my dilemma when I must type up a business card?

Almost as interesting as my job title is my school affiliation. That customary line is missing on my business card, and it can’t be supplied (unless you allow me to use YouTube U., as one colleague suggested I do). The absence of a school name after my own may cause confusion for some. They might wonder where I work and who exactly I work with. Do I work in the isolation of my home? Do I miss not having direct contact with others? Just how professionally active can one be as an independent contractor?

The truth is two-fold. I am both limited to and liberated by the Internet. I sometimes miss traditional teaching, but mostly I’m grateful for the opportunity to explore outside classroom walls. In some ways I’ve never fully left the classroom. Particularly in my roles as videomaker and blogger, I get to assist classroom teachers by providing materials and suggesting ideas. I’ve even been consulted to help develop lesson plans. Through correspondence, other teachers keep my sensitivity to classroom issues honed.

As for professional networking and support, I must say that I’ve never felt more a part of my field as I do at the present. Being an independent contractor allows me to choose who I collaborate with. This has led to an exciting mix of contacts. Different projects bring me into new circles, and through each one I grow in some way. I have more colleagues today than I ever did before I began working online. There’s no way I could have learned all that I have over the past few years without my interaction with other educators through e-mail, Skype calls, video conferences, and the like. I’m dependent on my colleagues for my independence.

"But what about the students?" you may question. "Don’t you miss that kind of interaction?" The same is true. In some ways I miss having a group physically in front of me, but in other ways I feel I am more effective through my online teaching and support. Students know that I’m accessible online, and they seek my help. I feel privileged to have gained their confidence, and just as I need my colleagues now more than ever, I also need my online following of ELLs, from the readers to the viewers to the paying private students. For without one to teach how could I call myself a teacher? And that’s what I am."

EnglishRyan

"Hello and welcome to www.EnglishRyan.com!
This website once housed a number of little English lessons I wrote and recorded myself. However, since the establishment of my IELTS website, http://www.ieltsielts.com, this website has become more of a place for me to share my ebooks and others writings.

A little bit about me
I was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and began my career in teaching after I finished university. I moved to Dubai in the summer of 2005 and taught with a number of ESL schools. I also had the privilege of working with some wonderful international universities on the Knowledge Village campus. With the University of Wollongong Dubai (Australian), I conducted courses in IELTS essay writing. At St Petersburg State University Dubai (Russian), I taught grammar, conversation and pronunciation courses. And at SZABIST Technical Institute (Pakistani), I taught technical English writing. After working with many students in preparation for their IELTS exams, I realized that there were very few quality IELTS writing resources. With some encouragement from my students, I filmed a few IELTS video lessons and uploaded them to YouTube. Since then, I have had the privilege of working with IELTS students all over the world.

After a wonderful 2.5 years living in Dubai, I decided to relocate to Shanghai and that is where I am now! I moved to Shanghai in November of 2007 and work privately teaching conversation and writing skills among various companies and a handful of families.

I hope my teaching experience and knowledge will help you improve your IELTS abilities quickly and effectively!"

JustVocabulary

The orginal "about us" about the site.

"Show Format

JustVocabulary produces 3 different Audio Vocabulary shows.
If you want to improve your English, you really need to expand your English vocabulary. That is why we introduce slightly more difficult words. All of Just Vocabulary's words are selected from GRE, SAT and TOEFL word lists.
Because usage examples are so important when learning the correct meaning of the word, we give 3 to 5 example sentences for each word, followed by the explanation of the meaning of the word.
Synonyms and Antonyms are also given for all of the words and, if useful, the history of the word.
Because repetition is so important when learning new words, we have review questions and QuickRecaps shows.
Most of the words are from the GRE word list, which makes Just Vocabulary ideal for study purposes.
The show is produced not by a professor or doctor in the English language. The show host is actually formally 'unqualified', but his advantage is that he is a student just like you.
Read more about the show host below, and if you have ideas on how to improve the show - please let us know!

The Host
Jan Folmer (1979) is the host of the Just Vocabulary podcast. (Facebook). He lived most of his life in The Netherlands and he moved to Cape Town in South Africa end 2004. English is his second language, which is why he understands the need to improve your vocabulary beyond your basic high school vocabulary. If you have any comments or suggestions, e-mail Jan

Each episode explains 2 words in great detail; many examples are given for each word. The history (etymology) of the word may be given, especially if it helps to understand or remember the word better. These episodes are 5 minutes each in length – and you can subscribe to these shows for free.
All of our older Just Vocabulary episodes are only available in our store! Premium Members also receive the Study Guides that come with each of the regular episodes.

The QuickRecap shows!
