Welcome to the Culips English Podcast!

"There are plenty of English podcasts out there, but our English as a second language (ESL) podcast is for people who want to have fun while learning natural, everyday English, focusing on idioms, expressions, and slang. We always speak English as it’s actually used in day-to-day life, and we give you plenty of explanations of new or interesting terms along the way. At Culips, we’re excited about culture and language!
Our English language podcast is for learners of all levels and ages. Each episode takes you out of the classroom and introduces you to common slang, natural expressions, and interesting vocabulary. Culture is also an important part of Culips, and we want you to get to know us!
By becoming a member of Culips English Podcast, you can learn even more from each episode. Culips Members have access to extra learning materials. As a member, you’ll get a written transcript for each of our episodes, so you can follow along while listening or review the text separately. You’ll also get detailed explanations of new or interesting vocabulary, with additional examples and cultural advice. After all that, you can take the quiz for each episode to see how much you’ve learned. And of course, our English podcast is designed to help you with your listening comprehension too!
We’re a group of friends in Montreal, Canada who thought it would be fun to create an English podcast for people learning the language. We all have experience teaching English and learning other languages, and we know just how challenging and rewarding that can be. We wanted to make an ESL podcast that focuses on the fun stuff: culture and expressions.
So what are you waiting for? Get started learning with Culips now!
Who we are
MauraMaura: Hello! I was really excited when I first heard about this ESL podcast project. It felt perfect for me. I have been teaching English for about 5 years now, in Quebec, Montreal and Tokyo, Japan. I have really enjoyed doing that and learning about different cultures at the same time. Being a student of French myself, I completely understand how difficult it is to learn a new language. That is also why I think it is super important to learn a language how it is actually spoken. I will always do my best to focus on modern English. I promise.

img_robin1.jpgRobin: I always have been interested in languages ever since I was young. And because of that, I went to university to study Linguistic and Cultural Anthropology. After that, I taught in Japan and in Quebec. And now with Culips, I am here to help you with your English language learning.

HarpHarp: Hello All. This is Harp from Culips. I have been fascinated and frustrated by languages since I was a young child. My native tongue is Punjabi and I didn’t actually learn English till I started school at 5 years old. I still remember mixing up potato and tomato when I was 8. I spent the last couple of years teaching conversational English in Canada and abroad in Korea and France. In my own attempt to learn French I started searching for Podcasts and didn’t find anything interesting. That set me on the path to create a fun and interactive way to learn languages. Hope you enjoy our podcasts.

JessieJessie: Hi! I met the Culips team after I moved to Montreal from Ontario to start a job as a medical writer, and I couldn’t wait to join in the fun! I first got involved in teaching ESL as a volunteer during university, and I’ve loved it ever since. I spent a year teaching English at a middle school in Korea, and I couldn’t wait to join the Culips team here in Montreal! I love learning, and I love helping other people to learn. So feel free to send any and all English or cultural questions our way! "

ENGLISH GRAMMAR ONLINE FOR YOU

"We put our first exercises online in April 2000. Our target group: just a handful of students to whom we were giving private tuition then. A year later, we were very surprised to find that our exercises were used by approx. 20 visitors per day. They found our sites via search engines. This encouraged us to offer more exercises on the internet and in August 2001 we started ego4u. Now we have approx. 45,000 users per day, lots of them are regular visitors.
ego4u is created by:
Heike Pahlow @ – Translator (German/English/Spanish) and English tutor with a TEFL certificate. Heike spent one year in Ireland and gave private English tuition during her college years. With the teaching materials developed for her courses, Heike originated the idea to offer online exercises on the web.
Mario Müller @ – Programmer. Mario did Informatics at college for a couple of years and then worked as a programmer for an international logistics company. He finally decided to put all his energy into programming ego4u. Mario is our real language expert, as he knows how to communicate successfully with computers in strange languages like XHTML, PHP and XML.
Stefanie Czapla @ – Illustrator. Stefanie created our mascot Egon, the dragon. She has also illustrated our nursery rhymes and grammar explanations. If you want to see more of her wonderful illustrations, visit Stefanie’s site kleiner-roter-drache.de (little red dragon)."

"A chef friend of mine once told me the secret to good cooking. According to him, success lies in obtaining excellent ingredients.

It all seems so simple really. And as a language teacher I can relate to this. We can’t overestimate the importance of the ingredients that we select for the classroom – that is the materials.

Materials should inspire teachers and engage students. They should be provoking (without necessarily being provocative although that can be good). They should arouse curiosity and get heads thinking and language emerging. During the last few years, the modern teacher has been given access to an explosion in good ingredients to take into the classroom.

Take Western Spaghetti for example – a great animation by filmmaker PES. During this one and a half minute clip, we watch a series of bizarre household objects – a ball of wool, a Rubik’s cube, a handful of rubber bands – being transformed into a delicious looking plate of spaghetti with tomato sauce.

The clip is everything we would want to get students on our side. But what do we do with it? Well, that is where Lessonstream comes in. Lessonstream is a selection of lesson plans – or rather, recipes – which serve to demonstrate how teachers can make use of such materials.

Of course, good chefs don’t stick rigidly to recipes. They adapt them. And I would never expect a teacher to use one of my lesson plans exactly how I have written it.
For that reason, the site uses a Creative Commons license. That is what the logo in the bottom right hand side of the screen is all about. What this means is that teachers have permission to remix, mash and share the content on my site for non-commercial purposes.

Have fun!

Jamie :-)  "

Speaking English Podcast

"My name is Sebastian Keil. I live in Hamburg, Germany. Check out my blog sebastiankeil.de.I bought the trademark hat in Stockholm in 2005. But I was always a hat guy. This is me in 2001
FAQ
  1. What is with the hat, why are you wearing it?
  2. Why are you doing this?
  3. Are you getting paid to do the podcast?
  4. Do you wear glasses or not?
1. What is with the hat, why are you wearing it?
A: I just felt naked when I recorded the first episodes, so I tried on several different clothes, from hockey jersey to suit. The hat worked.
2. Why are you doing this?
A: I like it.
3. Are you getting paid to do the podcast?
A: At the moment not. I used to get a small amount of money each month back when the episodes were hosted on that site that shall not be named, but not anymore. I am looking for sponsors to be honest but haven’t really looked that hard."
